Several years into my teaching I came to the realization that I was common. Prior to that, I would have said that I was good, or even above average. I tried to make learning fun, I had a good rapport with the students, and I was a fairly good communicator of the subject matter.
But if you would have looked closer, a little less than half of the class was not making meaningful learning gains, and another fourth (or so) were being held back from reaching their full potential. Some of the students were learning next to nothing, and being bored to tears – which explained the discipline issues.
I wasn’t celebrating their accomplishments in meaningful ways, I was penalizing their failure, I was focused on things other than their growth, and I was doing things in my classroom that were the same as everybody else.
Though I had good observations from my administrators, the truth of the situation eventually caught up with me. Forced to realize that I was not reaching all of my students and that I was utilizing teaching practices that most other teachers were using – with the same minimal effects – I decided it was time for a change.
I began reading teaching books as well as watching lectures and trainings about high impact teaching strategies. My mindset began to shift and I began to think about what was best for the students and how I could provide that for each student, though their needs were all different, because they are all different.
I began to value things that I had not previously valued; like helping students feel successful so that they could build upon their academic accomplishments. Or the fact that some students take longer than others to learn a math skill, and that the only way to reach him was to give him as much time as he needed – without penalizing him for needing that accommodation.
Slowly, I began making those changes in my classroom, and the results were amazing. My students began to enjoy being in my class and being successful. They started making real growth. And as they felt successful, and engaged, discipline issues vanished almost overnight.
Now I teach these ten strategies to other teachers, helping them have the same success that I was able to have with my students – and recapturing that joy for teaching as we transformed our methodology.
